The Montagu Monuments

In the picturesque conservation village of Warkton on the Boughton Estate, you might not expect to come across a world-class monument in the parish church, but if you visit, St Edmund’s Church, you will find four.

These Montagu Monuments were commissioned to commemorate key members of the Montagu family. As a reminder, Boughton comes from the Buccleuch family’s Montagu ancestors. Sculpted from fine marble, the monuments were positioned in four recesses in a purpose built chancel within the church.

The first two commissions were given to Roubiliac, who was the greatest sculptor to work in eighteenth century England.

Over the years these wonderful marbles have suffered internal damage and an exciting conservation project, funded by the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust, the Church and the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been proceeding since February 2014.

You can read more about the Monuments, the conservation project and visiting on our dedicated pages of the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust website.
