We’re proud to present Catherine Goodman. In the House of Tapestries, a major new exhibition of paintings, drawings and tapestries by British artist Catherine Goodman CBE.

The exhibition can be explored on free flow tours (weekends) as part of the opening and glimpsed on guided tours on the following dates:

  • Saturday 1st – Wednesday 5th August
  • Saturday 8th – Wednesday 12th August
  • Saturday 15th – Wednesday 19th August
  • Saturday 22nd – Wednesday 26th August
  • Monday 31st August – Wednesday 2nd September

For the best experience, we recommend visiting at the weekend, when the Great Hall free-flow tour gives you the opportunity to linger, explore, and enjoy the artwork at your own pace. Although guided tours also pass through these spaces, they follow a set schedule, so there is less time to stop and take in the collection.

The exhibition marks the first time Goodman has translated her painterly practice into tapestry, creating a compelling dialogue between new contemporary works and Boughton’s historic interiors and collections.

Inspired by Boughton House

Over several years, Catherine Goodman made many visits to Boughton, spending time exploring the House and drawing within its historic interiors. She was particularly inspired by the contrast between the grandeur of the state rooms and the more intimate spaces that connect them, where unexpected details, colours and stories can be discovered around every corner.

As she became more familiar with the House, Goodman began creating pastel drawings inspired by what she observed, from fragments of tapestry and decorative details to views through doorways and the atmosphere of the Great Hall. These drawings became the foundation for the paintings and tapestries featured in the exhibition.

The resulting works reflect both Boughton’s interiors and the wider estate landscape. Rich colour, texture and movement weave together elements of architecture, gardens, water and historic collections, creating artworks that are inspired by the spirit of Boughton while remaining uniquely Goodman’s own.
