Annabel Eley
Annabel Eley biography
After a foundation course at Lincoln College of Art followed by a degree in Jewellery Design at London’s Central School of Art, Annabel enjoyed an illustrious career as a jeweller, her award-winning designs attracting a loyal following over many years, and commissions from the Goldsmiths’ Company, The Royal Mint and De Beers.
A sabbatical from jewellery coincided with a desire to work on a larger scale in the form of painting and steel sculpture. Whilst Annabel’s artwork is informed by her extensive jewellery career, each discipline has a reciprocal impact on the others. Her enjoyment of texture and developing passion for colour found a new outlet in her painting, leading to a successful joint exhibition at Jonathan Cooper’s gallery in London.
The paintings are slowly built up with layers of paint and collage, punctuated with drawn and scraped lines. They often evolve from the landscape whether rural or urban/industrial, and many contain coastal elements.
“ My paintings convey my response to a place, situation, or feeling. Docks are particularly exciting places for me, the massive bulk of ships and wharves, the found shapes amongst structures and machinery, peeling and rusting surfaces, and flashes of bright colour. I am excited to be exhibiting a new series of work at Boughton House, as part of Northamptonshire Open Studios, whilst the full range of my work can be seen on my website www.annabeleley.co.uk”.
