At the close of summer, we carefully manage the wild areas and long grass on the Estate, sometimes cutting it earlier to make room for special events. Once cleared, the grass is left to regrow, and paths and walkways are maintained for visitors to enjoy peaceful walks through the landscape.
Amidst the mixed grasses, wildflowers start to emerge – often overlooked, these areas are truly stunning when the various seed heads bloom in late summer. The blend of grasses and wildflowers creates a rich, vibrant tapestry that adds incredible diversity to the landscape.

A Haven for Wildlife
The wild areas are not just beautiful – they’re essential for many creatures. These habitats provide homes for a variety of invertebrates, and also serve as feeding grounds and shelter for birds, frogs, newts, and wild animals. The wildflowers and grasses are especially important for pollinators, such as our resident bees from the hives, along with wild bees, wasps, and other insects that help sustain the Estate’s ecosystem.
Supporting Biodiversity
The wild areas at Boughton contribute significantly to the Estate’s overall biodiversity. The different layers of habitat – from the trees and water features to the wild areas – work in harmony, supporting each other and creating a diverse environment. This symbiotic relationship enhances the natural balance of Boughton and encourages a rich variety of species to thrive.
