The visit was organised by Matthew Curwen, Boughton’s Building Operations Manager and Chairman of the Collyweston Stone Slaters Trust (CSST), and Sam Rees, Boughton Estate Manager and Director of the CSST, in collaboration with Nigel from Claude N Smith Ltd, who kindly hosted the visit.
The event brought together representatives from Historic England, local conservation officers, and other heritage professionals, providing a valuable opportunity to share knowledge and strengthen networks within the conservation community.
During the visit, attendees explored the modern method of producing Collyweston slate, including the innovative process of freezing the extracted stone logs before splitting, or “cliving”, the slate. This revival of traditional slate production ensures that Collyweston – a material integral to the region’s architectural identity – is once again available to the market.

The Roof Restoration at Boughton House
While the Boughton House roof restoration project is utilising our existing stock of Collyweston slate, it is reassuring to know that new supply is now available. This development offers real hope for the future preservation of historic properties, reducing the need to strip old roofs and helping to protect the heritage and character of local architecture.
You can learn more about Boughton’s roof restoration and follow the progress of the works by visiting the project page.
